It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Laverne Ardell Brickley Newell, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. Laverne passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born on December 1, 1939, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Laverne was the daughter of Max and Elizabeth Brickley. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Barton Henderson Newell Jr., her parents, her sister Maxine Miller, and her grandson Seth Newell.
Laverne's life was one of devotion, service, and love. A dedicated nurse, she spent much of her career caring for others, always putting their needs before her own. She was a member of Horizon Church, where she found fellowship and strength throughout her life. Laverne was also a die-hard fan of both the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Pittsburgh Steelers, and she loved nothing more than gathering with family and friends to cheer on her teams.
Her family was the cornerstone of her life. Laverne is survived by her brother, David Brickley (Christine), and her sister-in-law, Pat Lombardo. Her children, Bud Newell (LouAnn), Greg Newell (Anna), Adrienne Mosley (Dan), and Lori Portella (Vic) were her pride and joy. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and wisdom to her grandchildren: Miranda Nichols (John), Bart Newell (Savannah), Dalton Newell (Kelly), Jesse Newell (Jodi), Alan Newell, Justin Mosley (Chelsee), Christine Burns, Herschel Portella (Sarah), Sarah Brewington (Leon), and Kasey Gordon.
Laverne was also a proud great-grandmother to Reese Newell, Hayden Newell, Wilma Newell, Madeline Newell, Jeremiah Mosley, Elliot Mosley, Katie Boykin, Samantha Burns, Maddie Burns, Caroline Burns, Micah Burns, Olivia Burns, Ellie Grace Brewington, Emma Brewington, and Leo Brewington.
She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and dear friends, all of whom were touched by her warmth, generosity, and ever-present smile.
Laverne’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her unwavering faith, deep love for her family, and kind spirit will never be forgotten. We will miss her deeply, but we take comfort in knowing she is now reunited with her beloved Barton and all those who preceded her.
A service to celebrate Laverne’s life will be held at Southern Heritage funeral home in Pelham, AL, Saturday, January 31, 2026. Visitation will take place at 11:00am, and funeral at 12:00pm.
May she rest in peace, and may her love continue to shine through those who were blessed to know her.
