

He was born on September 2, 1935, to Cadle and Beth Hunt Byerley. After serving in the United States Air Force from 1954-1957, Leon moved to Birmingham, Alabama and graduated from the University of Alabama. He worked at the University Hospital for several years and moved into healthcare administration with Jefferson Clinic P.C. until he retired. He also served his church and community through teaching, serving as a deacon and volunteering with the local Veteran’s Outreach program. He was a member of The Church of the Highlands, Fultondale, Alabama.
Leon lived at Kirkwood by the River for the last six years of his life and made many memories with his numerous friends there. He sang at Kirkwood each month using his beautiful voice for the glory of the Lord. Those who knew him, loved him for his witty disposition and willingness to help anyone in need. Leon’s faith in the Lord guided him and was reflected in his positive attitude, strength and unconditional love for others.
Leon was preceded in death by his wife, Tracey Byerley, his parents, Cadle and Beth Byerley, his brothers, C.K. Byerley, Frank Byerley and Harvey Byerley.
He is survived by his sister, Jeanette Byerley Hill; his children and their spouses: Brad and Elizabeth Byerley, Carlisle and Beth O’Meara, Michael and Carol Herren, Jason and Lisa Herren and Heath and Alison Townsend; his grandchildren: Morgan Byerley; Jackson Byerley; Emory O’Meara; Owen O’Meara; Andy Herren; Jake, Luke and Maddie Herren; Hunter and Josh Townsend .
Funeral arrangements will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35124, Saturday, August 1st with visitation at 10:00 AM and a service at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kirkwood by the River, 3605 Ratliff Road, Birmingham, Alabama 35210 in honor of our father.
