Lester Jay Whitt Jr. was born in Gadsden, Alabama on August 13, 1951, and died peacefully at his home in Birmingham, Alabama on July 28, 2024. Jay’s only hope in life and death was Jesus Christ and he is with Jesus now, definitely singing, probably with a guitar.
Jay was authentically himself with everyone who knew him. He was full of energy, life, joy and had an infectious optimism. He loved music and playing the guitar. Music inspired him, encouraged him, surrounded him with great friends, and has been his platform of ministry. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he was an active member of his church community and beloved Sunday School class. Sports, especially golf, brought him happiness, but his great love was Alabama football. Above all, Jay had an extraordinary ability to connect with and genuinely love people. He was easy to be friends with, brought smiles to everyone, and would do anything for his family and friends.
He was a loving companion to Sabre Landham Whitt, his wife of 47 years. They began most days together on the porch with coffee and their Bibles. Their marriage and friendship grew deeper over many seasons of life—raising girls, watching sports, listening to music, traveling, and enjoying their grandchildren. In recent years, Jay and Sabre journeyed together through the challenges of Parkinson’s disease. During that time, Jay never wavered in his faith in Jesus Christ. Sabre selflessly cared for him and considered it a privilege to serve and love him.
Jay was an encouraging and steadfast father to his talented daughters— Lauren Whitt (Colby), Katie Pless (Paul), and Caroline Campbell (Henry). He was their biggest and loudest supporter, whether cheering from the sidelines, singing “Happy Birthday,” or just calling to check in. Jay was also an exceptional gift-giver.
He was “Jay Jay” to his eight grandchildren: Virginia (12), Caroline (10), and Ann Weldon (8) Pless; Maggie (4), Betsy (3), and Savannah (5 months) Campbell; Asher (2) and Avery (1) Whitt. He knew them all and made each of them laugh and smile with his songs and stories. His grandchildren were always welcome on his lap and their visits brought him great joy.
Jay grew up in Gadsden, the oldest son of Lester Jay and Fannie Mae Whitt. He and his brother, Kim (Cynthia and daughters, Paige and Susan), had a special bond forged in backyard football and preserved faithfully through the years. He graduated from Gadsden High School (Class of 1969) and the University of Alabama (Class of 1973). He was a longtime member of Briarwood Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. His love of people made him a successful Vice President, salesman, and co-owner at Business Systems & Consultants, Inc. (BSC) over a 30+ year career.
A service will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, July 31st at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Visitation will be at 9:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation (michaeljfox.org) or the charity of your choice.
In the words of Psalm 100, Jay made a joyful noise to the Lord. He served the Lord with gladness. And now he has arrived in His presence with singing. To God be the glory.
