Dr. Lyman C. Norden, Lieutenant Colonel Retired (Lt Co-R) Alabama Air National Guard, 75, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away on June 17, 2021. He was born in Napoleon, OH on December 6, 1945. Lyman graduated from The Ohio State University where he received his Doctor of Optometry. In 1969, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps and later joined the Alabama Air National Guard Medical unit in August 1986, where he served until December 2007. Lyman had a career in optometry as faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Optometry, and at the Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He served as Chief of the Optometry Section, growing the residency program. He was a member of the American Board of Optometry, American Optometric Association, Association of Military Surgeons of the United States, and was a past president of the Armed Forces Optometric Society. He had a passion for editing the Southern Journal of Optometry and riding Cushman motor scooters.
Lyman married Kathy on August 19, 1978. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; two daughters, Tracey (Jeremy), Dana; brother, Lee (Marsha); grandchildren, Patrick and James. He is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Helen Norden and sister, Arleen.
A Rosary will take place at 5:00 p.m. immediately followed by a public visitation that will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The funeral will be held the following morning, on June 24, 2021 at 10 a.m. Both services will take place at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. He will be interred at the Alabama National Cemetery.
