Marie Mizelle (Zelle) Moore Buckner returned to the Lord on January 6, 2022. She was 93. She grew up around a loving family in West Point, Georgia. A literate woman, she graduated West Point High School, Shorter College and attended Auburn University. She had a career as a teacher in Dalton, GA, West Point, GA, the Atlanta school system, Fulton County and Louisville, KY. Even afterwards, she never stopped teaching. There was but one man for Mizelle and they were truly made for each other. Dwight Buckner was the love of her life. They married during a three day leave he had in the midst of the Korean War and after he safely returned they were inseparable. She was an active member of Vestavia Hills Baptist Church where she was an original member of the Daycare committee. Also she was an officer in the Friendship class. She also taught Bible school for many years. She was an original member of the Garlandia Garden Club. She was active in Vestavia schools as a volunteer, PTA member and band parent. Being born in Georgia and attending Auburn we could never figure out why she was such an Alabama football fan. She never missed a game on TV and sometimes she even watched Tennessee play (when they played Bama). She also rooted for the Rambling Wreck of Georgia Tech because Dwight graduated from there. She was well read and well versed on the news which she watched faithfully because her son in law works in it. She preferred the other station though. If you knew her you got a gift from her or a Christmas card. She was the most generous person in the world. She always thought of others before herself. She kept up with high school friends and corresponded with many friends and family members. She could recite poems, song lyrics and Bible chapter and verses to the end. The annual Christmas story from the chapter of Luke was a yearly highlight. May we all be blessed that way. She was a very smart lady and the family had many, many philosophical discussions with her which somehow she never lost.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Thomas Dwight Buckner; her parents, Marie Cumbee Moore and Earnest Everett Moore; and her brother, William E. Moore.
Mizelle is tearfully survived by her brother, Hubert C. Moore (June) and sister-in-law, Ann. She is also survived by her daughter, Jan Marie (Mike), grandson, Hunter (Holly); and by her count, two nieces and two nephews, nine great nieces and nephews. She knew all of their names. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Vestavia Baptist Church. She will be put to rest beside her loving husband on Monday, January 10, after a graveside service at Southern Heritage Cemetery in Pelham, AL at 2:00 p.m.
