Mark Lyman Clark, aged 71, departed from his earthly home in Birmingham, AL, on 07/05/2026 to join his beloved Savior. Mark was born in Weston, West Virginia, to Sgt. Major, USMC Rodney R. Clark and his wife, Virginia Nell (Posey) Clark. The third of five children in a military family, Mark attended elementary school in West Virginia, followed by a move to North Carolina when he was about 8 years old. He continued school at Camp Lejeune and later lived at Cherry Point MCAS and in Havelock, NC, where he graduated as Valedictorian of the Havelock High School class of 1972. He graduated with both a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in history and political science from East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. His graduate studies at the University of Alabama in Birmingham led him to settle and live the rest of his life in our lovely city of Birmingham.
In his career, Mark worked for the Social Security Administration Southeastern Program Service Center in Birmingham as a claims review and processing specialist, an assistant for preparing Administrative Law Judge case decisions, and an expeditor of entitlement issues. Mark worked in a satisfying career helping and serving others for decades, from the 1980’s until he retired at almost 70.
A kind and generous man, Mark also devoted his entire life outside of his job to helping others and making their lives better and easier. People in his community and his church counted on him, and he was recognized as being steadfast in his presence, his commitments, his friendships, his faith, his devotion, his donations, and his dedication. Mark was also a faithful member of Shades Mountain Church of Christ. He will be greatly missed.
Mark was preceded in death by his father, Sgt. Major, USMC, Rodney R. Clark, and his older brother, Stephen B. Clark.
Mark is survived by his mother, Virginia Clark of Havelock, NC; sister Rodnea (Clark) and husband David Brunson of Columbus, OH; sister Robin (Clark) and husband Mack McPherson of Wichita Falls, TX; adopted sister Melissa Clark of Bogue, NC; sister-in-law Robin H. Clark of Randolph, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will also be remembered by many close, dear friends in his church family and community, too many to name.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shades Mountain Church of Christ.
A time of fellowship will be Friday, July 10, 2026, from 8:30 am to 9:00 am, with a celebration of Mark's life at 9:00 am in the Chapel at Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham.
