

Marty was born in Meridian, Mississippi on December 13, 1936 to Hugh Malone Garrett, Sr. and Mabel Deese McNeal Garrett. She graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School in the Birmingham, Alabama area and attended Berea College in Kentucky.
After college, she returned home to Birmingham and worked in banking. She met Dewey Clayton Duncan while working as a bank teller, and they were married on May 21, 1959.
Marty and Dewey were married 65 years and had four daughters, Penny Duncan Fox (Gene), Nicki Duncan Richard, Kelly Duncan Rasco (Brian), and Wendy Duncan Spain (Daniel); and four grandchildren, Amanda Lee Richard Sherman (Jerid), Meagan Victoria Richard Phillips (Hunter), Katherine Elise Rasco, and Matthew Brian Rasco. They also had six great-grandchildren, Thomas, Emma Lynn, and Annabelle Phillips and Rosemary, James, and Abigail Sherman.
Marty has a sister-in-Law, Marilon Garrett; a niece, Kim Duncan Donaldson; nephews, Darryl Garrett, Milton, Russell, and Alan Duncan; and several cousins.
Marty was a member of the American Sewing Guild and several Facebook groups for quilting, sewing, American Girl dolls, cooking, and baking. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, baking, cake decorating, and cooking for her family. She collected cookbooks of all kinds and American Girl dolls and their accessories. She also was an avid reader of mystery/thriller books. She enjoyed watching old movies and comedy television shows.
Marty was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dewey; her parents, Hugh and Mabel Garrett; her brother, Hugh Garrett, Jr.; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama on March 10, 2026 from 10:30-11 a.m., followed by A Service of Remembrance for Marty at Ridout's Southern Heritage, 475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124. All family and friends are welcome to stay for the lunch reception after the service.
Marty will be laid to rest with Dewey at Alabama National Cemetery, Montevallo.
