Martha Martinez Shirey

February 23, 1952 – November 26, 2025
Obituary of Martha Martinez Shirey
IN THE CARE OF

Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery

Martha Shirey, loving wife of William and mother to Charles and Walter, passed away and entered the glory of heaven with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 26, 2025 after a long illness. Her final moments were spent peacefully in her home in Birmingham, Alabama surrounded by family.

Martha Shirey was born in Tampico, Mexico, where she spent the first 23 years of her life before embarking on a new chapter with her husband. Martha’s artistic talents shone through her skillful crafts, particularly in doll making and interior design. A talented cook, she delighted in sharing her love of Mexican cuisine with family and friends. Her infectious sense of humor brought joy to all who knew her, and she cherished moments spent laughing and reminiscing with her brothers and sisters. Martha dedicated 45 years to volunteering with Vacation Bible School and other childcare church programs, where her love for children was evident. She embraced many children as her own, offering them guidance and affection. Family was the cornerstone of her life, and she cared deeply for each member, always ready to provide comfort and support. Her strength, independence, and generosity were hallmarks of her character, as she navigated life with resilience and unwavering faith in Jesus.

Martha will be dearly missed by all who knew her. The Shirey family asks that she be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing. She is survived by Charles (Tabitha) and Walter (Christa Nevin), as well as sisters Maria Esther Martinez Rivera and Sagrario Martinez, and brothers Raúl de San Luis Martinez and Juan Misael Martinez Rivera, all of Tampico, Mexico. She also left a large collection of porcelain dolls, many that she made herself.

A private ceremony will be held on December 3, 2025. Flowers and memorial gifts are not necessary.
