

Mary Boggs Godfrey, age 98, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at a local skilled nursing care facility. Mrs. Godfrey was born in Hogansville, Georgia on January 30, 1921, daughter of Claud and Daisy Ivey Boggs. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Hugh Godfrey; and son, David Hugh Godfrey.
Mrs. Godfrey was a member of West Rome Baptist Church for 62 years. After she moved to the Birmingham, Alabama area in 2012 to be near a son and daughter-in-law, she transferred her church membership to Shades Mountain Baptist Church, Vestavia Hills.
For 12 years, Mrs. Godfrey was a teacher in the Floyd County, Georgia School System. She then worked until she retired at Floyd County Department of Family and Children Services.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Joseph Charles and Joy Chastain Godfrey of Birmingham; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Weaver Godfrey of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Godfrey is also survived by four grandchildren, Neil Godfrey, Brent Godfrey, Rebekah Godfrey Ussery, and Elizabeth Godfrey Ford; and six great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. EST on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Oaknoll Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Rome, Georgia. Dr. Joe Godfrey will officiate.
