Jeanie A. Gundersen of Birmingham passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, on May 15 at the age of 96, after a short illness. Born in Chester S.C. January 29, 1923 and raised in Clayton, Al., she attended the University of Montevallo for 2 years. She met and married Robert M. Gundersen in 1944 and they moved to Birmingham in 1959. She spent over 70 years as a Mother and Grandmother and was the bedrock of a large and diverse family. She was a selfless and thoughtful friend and a shining example of the fact that knowledge, acceptance and love can overcome any fault. She was a devoted member of Canterbury United Methodist Church for 60 years, and she was an avid lover of cooking, The Sound of Music, and especially Wheel of Fortune. She will be missed dearly but thru the love and joy she imparted on everyone she met, her spirit will live on. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert M. Gundersen, Sr. She is survived by her 3 loving children, Robert M. Gundersen, Jr., Jeanie G. Brown (Matthews), Beth Gundersen (Leslie Smukler), her much beloved 7 grandchildren: Grant Gundersen, Bethany Lepe, Alex Gundersen, Hunter Brown, Andrew Brown, Joshua Jones, Camden Jones, and 3 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Canterbury on Monday, May 20 at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Red Mountain Theatre Company or United Ability of Birmingham.

To the Gundersen children, your mother was a gracious and loving Southern lady. Jeanie, you were so blessed to have her in your home for so many years, and she was blessed to share that time with you and your family and many extended visitors. Your family with your mom at the helm represents what we should all strive for...love, acceptance and joy! May your mother's memory stay part of you forever. Love Kay...so wish I could be with you for her service.
