Nancy Dunnahoe Mooney

Survivors include Nancy's husband of 56 years, William Kenneth Mooney; daughter, Marie Alleyne Sobol (Phil); son, William Marshall Mooney (Shannon); grandchildren, Alisa Sobol, Austin Mooney (Ashton), Andrew Sobol, and John Wyatt Mooney; and great-grandchild, Carter Mooney. She is also survived by her sisters, Martha Prothro (John) and Judy Barnette.

Throughout the years, Nancy loved sewing for Alleyne, Alisa, and her grandsons, and cherished spending time with them. Any mention of her five grandchildren brought a twinkle to her eye and a story of their accomplishments. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Nancy loved Jesus and invested deeply in the lives of children wherever she lived. She graduated from Louisiana Tech and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Her specialty was working with children who had special and behavioral needs.

Nancy served several churches as a Preschool Minister and Preschool Director. These included Shades Crest Baptist Church Preschool and Kindergarten in Birmingham, as well as the children’s and preschool ministries of Indian Springs Baptist and Crosscreek Baptist churches. One of her greatest joys was helping new ministries lay solid foundations for programs serving children and preschoolers. The Adventure Nook at First Christian Church was one such ministry close to her heart. She was always grateful for the teachers and parents who supported children’s ministries.

In addition to her ministry work, Nancy loved teaching first and third graders in Pascagoula, Mississippi, Phenix City, Alabama, and Fort Benning, Georgia. She and her husband also served with a ministry in Ukraine, participating in three mission trips and forming lifelong friendships there.

A Celebration of Life service will be held for Nancy at Shades Crest Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 with Mark Johnson officiating. The family will fellowship with friends from 1-2 p.m., prior to the service at 2 p.m.
