

After graduating from Woodlawn High School, Otto earned his undergraduate degree at Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines, and later retired from Stockham Valves and Fittings after 35 years of employment. He was an active member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Hoover.
Otto was predeceased by his loving wife of 39 years, Bettye Hildreth Carter; his parents, T. Otto Carter and Gertrude Davis Carter; son, Gary Carter; and grandson, Nathan Carter Miller; and two sisters, Annie Mae Tatum and Lenora Hamilton.
Survivors include Otto's two daughters, Lenora Sharkey (Ken) and Kay Carter Miller, all of Hoover; two sons, Otto Carter III (Anne) of Birmingham and Thomas Lee Carter (Suzette) of Maylene; seven grandchildren, David Sharkey (Brooke), Karen Sharkey (Michael), Alan Carter, William Carter (Allison), Zachary David Miller, Freddie Carter (Ashley), and Shae Carter; and one great-grandson, Charles David Sharkey.
Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m. on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, Hoover, immediately followed by the 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at the church. Burial, Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
