Paul was born on August 16, 1943, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, to Whiteford Yates and Edna Martin Hubbard. He grew up alongside his beloved brother, Richard, with whom he shared a bond defined by good-natured mischief and lifelong affection. Their playful "ribbing" continued throughout the years, marked by shared smirks, winks, and the occasional good-humored declaration of, "Well, that ain’t the way it went," or "Now tell the whole truth."
A true man of service, Paul was an integral part of the Marlboro Rescue Service in his younger years, became certified in scuba diving, and also pursued his pilot’s license. He spent ten years as the manager of the A&P Grocery Store in Cheraw, South Carolina, where he led and mentored numerous employees with grace, honesty, and an occasional wrestling move.
Paul's commitment to the Lord was evident early on: He sang in a gospel quartet and served as a supply pastor for various churches for seven years. While being actively recruited by the FBI, he felt the Holy Spirit’s call into full-time ministry and obediently followed.
On August 4, 1973, Paul married the love of his life, Sharon Yvonne Davis. Shortly thereafter, they moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Paul pursued his theological studies. He earned both a Master of Divinity and a Master of Religious Education from New Orleans Theological Seminary, all while serving as Pastor to Red Bluff Baptist Church in Greensburg, Louisiana.
Upon graduation, Paul accepted a call to serve as Minister of Singles/Administrator at First Baptist Church, Winter Park, Florida. Eight years later, he was called to serve as Pastor of Normandale Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, the church relocated to East Montgomery and became known as Lakeview Baptist Church. "Bro. Paul," as he was affectionately known to his parishioners, lovingly and compassionately served his flock there for approximately thirty-three years. Even while under hospice care, his dedication was unwavering, as he spoke of his congregation and yearned to continue the work to which the Lord had called him.
Rev. Hubbard is survived by his wife of more than 52 years, Sharon; their three children, Stephanie, Christopher, and Matthew (Jordan); his beloved brother, Richard Hubbard; and his nieces, Sandra C. Best and Gwen Bryant.
