Visitation will be 12-1 p.m. on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL, immediately followed by the funeral service at 1 p.m. at Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Birmingham, AL. Rev. Billy Hunt will officiate.
Mr. Stephens was the first town clerk for Indian Springs Village and an active member of that community's original "Pot Hole Crew."
He attended Auburn University and graduated from UAB. He was employed as a CPA for serveral years until his retirement from the U.S. Government.
Mr. Stephens was a life-long member of Vestavia Primitive Baptist Church and an avid Auburn football supporter.
After retirement, he and his wife, the former Lola Wyrosdick, traveled worldwide for many years. He played fast pitch softball for Coleman Auto Parts until his 70's. The top joys of his life were Lola, their daughters, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren.
Mr. Stephens was predeceased by his parents, Jimmie Leona Wise Stephens and Garlin Irvin Stephens Sr., and one sister, Mary Moore.
In addition to his wife, Lola, survivors include daughters, Diane S. Bell, Paula Stephens, and Terry Johnson (Steve); siblings, Ruth, Helen, Velma, Dorothy, Clarence, Shirley, Junior, Jimmy, James, and Patsy; grandchildren, Lori Stovall (Keith), Jason Crawford, Heather Lawing (Jason), Andrea Mertens (Nick), Lacey Crawford, Katy Johnson, Tyler Johnson, and Parker Johnson; great-grandchildren, Emily, Hannah, and Hailey Stovall, Zoe Crawford-Logue, Gracyn and Bryson Lawing, Ford Mertens, and baby girl McKenley Mertens arriving this summer.
