Peyton Lacy, Jr., 85, of Birmingham, AL, passed away peacefully on December 16th, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born to Peyton Lacy, Sr. and Virginia Richey Lacy in Anniston, Alabama on April 4th, 1940, Peyton lived a life marked by a passion for family, friends, dogs, music, Alabama football, and the Dodgers. Those who knew Peyton best remember him as smart, funny, outgoing, and gregarious—bringing joy to every room with his contagious laughter.
He was a graduate of Anniston High School class of 1958 where he played football and made dear lifelong friends, many of whom he remained in touch with until the end of his life. Peyton received a bachelor’s degree in history and journalism from The University of Alabama and then went on to study law at the University of Alabama School of Law. From 1965 to 1967, he was a Captain in the Army of the Jag Corps and stationed in Germany. After returning from Germany, he worked at the Labor Relations Board in New Orleans, LA, where he made lifelong colleagues and friends. When he returned to Birmingham to practice law, he became a celebrated attorney at Lange, Simpson, Robinson, and Somerville and later a founding partner at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stuart.
He is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy, his sister Virginia Lacy Stokes (Ronald) and their children Sharon Stokes Calvert (Corey) and Ron Stokes. He was a devoted father to Bartie McLaren (Joe), Mamie Head (Forrest), Callie Mauldin (John), John Mauldin, Lizzie Turner (Eric), and was also preceded in death by his cherished son Zachary. Peyton was a beloved grandfather to Brooke, Skye, Ellie, Ethan, J.B., Delia, and Wylie, who knew him affectionately as Buppo and Grampers, and he is also survived by his cousins, Mary Emma Bunch, Katherine Lacy, Robert Lacy, Stewart Lacy, Jan Lacy, Ben Allen Lacy, and Linda Lacy Orlando.
