Philip David Smith

Philip David (Dave) Smith, 81, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, passed away Friday, July 31, 2020, after complications from Alzheimer's Disease. Dave is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Hazel Thomas Smith; son Scott David Smith (Debbie) of Riverchase; son Philip Joel Smith (Cyndi) of Wilsonville; daughter Marni Allison Ulch (Kevin) of Vestavia Hills; and sister, Martha Lee. His grandchildren include Haden David Smith, Merritt Marie Smith, Philip Connor Smith, Andrew David Ulch, and James Warren Ulch. His great grandchild is River Marie Pilcher. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Helen Smith; brothers Harold, Bob, Don, and Rick Smith; and sisters Barbara Peterman and Gloria Dugan. Dave was born in Taylorville, Illinois, and grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan. Upon graduation from Battle Creek Central High School, he joined the military and served as a medic with the United States Air Force in Tripoli, Libya, during peacetime. Dave enjoyed working in the sales force of the lumber industry for many years with Marshall Lumber Company, Union Camp, American International Forest Products, Birmingham International Forest Products, and the Woodsmith. In the early 1990's he began Smith Family Companies, a very successful venture with his two sons. He was an active member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church and loved to sing in the choir and fellowship with his Sunday School class. His pastimes included travel, golf, cooking, and loving on all his grandchildren. A visitation will be Tuesday, August 4th, at 10:00am, Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, with a memorial service following at 11:00am. Please wear a mask and follow COVID-related guidelines. A graveside service for family members will be held afterward. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
