A Hatley High School graduate, Richard earned his Bachelor and Master degrees in Education from Mississippi State. Later, he earned his AA at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
Richard was a U.S. Army veteran, proudly serving his country from 1954 to 1956. His professional career as a school teacher and principal was mostly at Pittman Junior High, where he served for 29 years. He was a long-time member of the Alabama Education Association.
Richard was active as a deacon at three churches and in many other community organizations. He dedicated his life to ministry and sharing the Gospel of Christ. He was not only a fisher of men, but also a fisher of bass.
Survivors include Richard's wife of almost 68 years, Betty Ruth Farrar; son, Rick Farrar (Kim); daughter, Katherine Farrar Cornelius (Mitchell); four grandchildren, R. Matthew Farrar, Adrian Farrar Thomas, Brittany Cornelius Hicks, and Chelsea Cornelius Prestridge; four great-grandchildren; and one brother, Harlon B. Farrar.
The family will greet friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama, followed by A Service of Remembrance for Richard at 1 p.m. at the funeral home's chapel. Burial will be at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.
