Robert “Bobby” Asa Thacker, age 74, of Shelby County, passed away on December 8, 2020. He was born to Jock and Martha Thacker on August 12, 1946, in Birmingham, AL. He attended Shades Valley High School and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1968, where he was President of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Bobby continued to receive his Doctor of Dental Medicine from The University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1971 and became a Board-Certified Orthodontist. This was one of his proudest achievements. He was incredibly, and justifiably proud of being driven and self-sufficient enough to support his dreams. He was raised in a household with little financial support, but still achieved great things as an Orthodontist, husband, and father. Bobby found his calling serving others as an Orthodontist in the community, and as a dentist in the Air Force, and later The Leadership Council for the UAB School of Dentistry. He served others without request or desire for compensation, it was what drove him.

Aviation was a huge part of Bobby’s life because he was introduced to aviation at a young age by his father. He received his private pilots license at age 17 and went on to accumulate additional ratings. He helped pay his way through dental school as a flight instructor. His love of aviation continued for the rest of his life. Bobby took every opportunity to take to the skies. When he was not working as an orthodontist or flying, he enjoyed his family, entertaining, and working in his yard. Bobby had an adventurous spirit and loved to travel to unusual destinations with his family-he made his own path. He enjoyed all outdoor sports. He enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, scuba diving, and boating. Bobby fulfilled his duty to his patients and remained dedicated to spending his free time with friends and family. His friends and family can attest to his willingness to help any individual in need. He would stop at nothing to ensure people he cared about were taken care of whether friend, family, employee, or colleague. Many can attest to using his guidance and assistance on many occasions, and his loved ones will no longer have this privilege. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Russel Thacker (Jock) and Martha Powell Thacker and his brother, Caldwell Thacker. Bobby is survived by his wife of 36 years, Jamie Mosely Thacker; his children, Jock Michael Thacker, Robert Durham Thacker, Brian Burnett Thacker and Jodi Thacker Rogers and his brother, John Russell Thacker (Dawn.)

Dr.Thacker was my orthodontist only for a few months, but even in those months he smiled every appointment I had an that showed me that inside he was joyful an very into what he was doing he would always tell me after every appointment “those pearly whites are looking better everytime”. He was wonderful an will very much be missed.

Dr. Robert Thacker was my orthodontist. He put braces on my teeth in High school and later in adulthood. He also put braces on my brother, Robert as well. He would always tell me that my brother Robert was the better patient because he only had to get braces once. My heart broke when I heard the news. No one will ever replace Dr. Thacker. His love of patients, his sense of humor and heart work will be missed. He was an extension of my community and family.

Dr. Thacker was my orthodontist years ago and a wonderful man and he let me work out payments with him to put my braces on me when I was 19 years old back in 1989.My name is Darren Mcdonald. My sister Debra also had braces done with him.We were going to let him do my grandaughters braces eventually.I just wanted to send my prayers to the family and his friends and co workers.Great man and and will be dearly missed.

This man touched me through my office visits with him. I always looked forward to seeing what wild shirt he had on. On one occasion when he was adjusting my braces, I let out a loud scream as a joke to which he sternly replied “that’s not funny”. Not only did he straighten my teeth but he aligned my jaw which many other doctors had told me I would have to have surgery to repair. He removed my braces the day he passed away. I will miss him.

Me and my 2 daughters Emma and Katie, had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Thacker about 10 years ago when he put beautiful smiles on my daughters faces... not just because of the braces, he greeted them each time with a kind word and they grinned from ear to ear. We thought very highly of Dr. Thacker and he will be forever missed. Sending Love and Prayers to his family. ❤️🙏🏻

Dr. Thacker was the best orthodontist! I’ve been going there for 10 years because I always went with my sister when she had braces and then I had to get braces in 4th grade and got them off in 8th grade. He was always so sweet to me and would always ask me how I’ve been. He was so welcoming and caring. He will missed and I’m so glad I met him!
