Roger Dale Massey Sr.

Roger was born on October 17, 1943, to Horace and Glittis Massey. He was raised in a loving home with nine other siblings. He was also fortunate enough to be loved and cared for by George L. Scott Jr. and Wilma Scott. Roger attended Georgia Military Academy, Marion Military Institute, Auburn University, and various banking leadership courses.

Roger’s legacy is lived on by his wife, Peggy Massey; his children, Kimberly Gilbert (Nathan), Christy Manahan (Michael), Roger Dale Massey Jr. (Stephanie), and Benjamin Massey (Haley); his grandchildren, Andrew Steele, Patrick Steele (Kristen), Haley Shearer (Bridge), Jake Massey (Jessica), Matthew Manahan, Ryan Steele, Tommy Manahan, Maggie Manahan, Sara Massey, Abbey Kate Massey, Lincoln Massey, John Mark Massey, and Carmen Massey; his great-grandchildren, Scarlett Steele, Jackson Steele, Vivienne Steele, and Hannah Steele; and his surviving siblings, Danny Joe Massey (Cathy), Terry Massey (Marsha), and Debbie Burnett (James). He was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Glittis Massey.

Roger built a distinguished career as a homebuilder, developer, and businessman in the Birmingham and Shelby County area. Beginning in 1983, he built more than 70 homes in the Willow Glen Subdivision for first-time homebuyers, and later developed the Olde Towne Forest and South Forty subdivisions in Alabaster. Over the course of his career, in partnership with other builders, he helped bring hundreds of homes to the communities he loved. He served as President of Enmar Corporation, was a founder of Liberty Homebuilders, Inc. and South Forty Corp., and later ran Roger Massey Contracting. He also worked in banking as Senior Vice President of City Federal Savings and Loan Association and as a director of First National Bank of Columbiana. Finally, he and his wife, Peggy, owned Heathermoor Estates in Leeds for over 40 years, where he constantly extended his benevolence and generosity to all of his residents.

Roger was deeply committed to civic and community life. He served as Chairman of the Board of Shelby Medical Center and on the Shelby County Regional Library Board. He gave his time to numerous organizations, including the Association of Credit Executives, the Shelby County Health Care Authority, the Shelby County Health Care Foundation, the Office of Economic Opportunity Board of Directors, Shelby County Youth Athletics, the Exchange Club of Mountain Brook, and the Jaycees. The family also remembers his generosity in donating land in Alabaster for community purposes, including property associated with the Albert L. Scott Library and the Alabaster Fire Department Firehouse 1.

Beyond his professional and civic accomplishments, Roger will be remembered above all for his kindness. He had a generous spirit and a willingness to help everyone, whether it was family, a friend, or someone he'd never met. He often helped those in need find work and found homes for stray animals. Not only did he help everyone he could, but he treated them like and invited them into his family. He was rarely found without a baby in his arms, dog by his side, or a dessert in hand. Roger was always telling the best stories, teaching his children and grandchildren many life lessons, and attending many sporting events and performances of his grandchildren. He had a love for deep sea fishing, Auburn football, and vintage cars.

Roger will be remembered as a builder in every sense of the word. A builder of homes, community, and family. Most importantly, he will be remembered as a man whose generosity and empathy touched everyone lucky enough to meet him.

A visitation will be held in Roger's honor on Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 1:30-3:30 pm at Southern Heritage Funeral Home with a graveside service following at 3:30 pm at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
