Rose Johns Stephenson

Rose Johns Stephenson, age 88, passed away on September 6, 2019, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her son-in-law, John Kinney; her adopted Hammers’ family; and numerous friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis and Lillie Johns; daughter, Leigh Stephenson Kinney; son, Dr. Stuart X. Stephenson III; and her beloved husband of 68 years, Stuart X. Stephenson, Jr. Rose was born July 18, 1931 in Montgomery, AL. After graduating from high school, she attended Auburn University where she earned an Art degree. Rose and Stuart met and dated while students at Auburn and were married on January 20, 1951, in Newport, Rhode Island. After raising her children, Rose decided to go back to school to earn a degree in nursing. She became a registered nurse, working first in an operating room and later in a surgeon’s office. She worked for Dr. Harry Littleton for 15 years. Following Rose’s retirement from nursing, she turned to her early love of painting and spent time traveling all over the country and abroad attending painting workshops. Rose was an accomplished artist with many of her works on display at the School of Nursing at Auburn University. Rose was also involved in various community and volunteer organizations. She attended St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Birmingham. The family wishes to thank Affinity Hospice and caregivers, Jackie Rogers, Rosetta Howard, Kanesha Colvin, Carolyn Branch, and Maggie Frazier for their compassionate care of “our Rose.” In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rose’s honor to the Rose and Stuart Stephenson Endowed Scholarship - Auburn University School of Nursing www.augiving@auburn.edu 317 South College St. Auburn, AL 36849.
