Dr. Sue Welch Johnson

Dr. Sue Welch Johnson passed away on August 17, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama, at age 97. Sue was born in Savannah, Tennessee on January 4, 1929, the daughter of Julian Kenneth Welch and Adelaide Sevier Welch. She married Alsey Mann Johnson in 1954, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Jane Sevier and Julia Claiborne Johnson, her son John Mann Johnson and her grandchildren, Anna Richardson, Dr. John Lucien Johnson, Charlotte Benedict, William Marcil and Mary Davis Marcil, and two great grandchildren, Eliza Lori Johnson and John West Richardson.

Dr. Sue graduated from Hardin County High School in 1947 and attended the University of Tennessee. She graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Medicine in 1952, where she was one of only two women in her class. She practiced medicine in Brownsville, Tennessee and later in Shelbyville, Tennessee. She was a dedicated physician beloved by her patients, friends and family.

Her funeral will be held on October 17 at 2:00 P.M. at Tabernacle Cemetery in Brownsville, Tennessee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the Tabernacle Kinfolks Association c/o Suzanna Martinez, 770 Ross Road, Brownsville, TN 38012.
