She was born on November 26, 1940, to John Henry Curtis and Alma Brown Curtis. She completed her high school education at Shades Valley High School. Glenda Sue Curtis was united in holy matrimony with Gaines Franklin Jones on July 22, 1961, in Birmingham, Alabama. Their union was blessed with three children.
After being a homemaker for many years, she received her nursing degree from Samford University and completed her Master's degree in Business at Birmingham Southern. She had a varied and meaningful work life. She worked for years in nursing in local hospitals then began her geriatric nursing career where she was Director of Nursing at many local nursing homes. Very often when she went out, someone would approach her and say that they had worked with her or had family members that she cared for during her nursing career. Later in life, she accepted a position as a librarian. Her love for books and reading along with her love of people made this a perfect fit for her work. She would often say that was one of her most favorite jobs. Sue was a lifelong learner and pursued knowledge and training throughout her life. She pursued training as a small craft pilot, a real estate professional, an artist, an equestrian, a photographer, and a cake decorator along with other hobbies.
She was a faithful and beloved member of Parkwood Church of God. She loved her church and even when the pandemic changed participation, she could be found sitting in her car in the parking lot at church with her radio tuned to the service as often as possible. Sue stayed active at her church and in her community as well as a part of several book clubs which were always a delight to her. In her leisure, she enjoyed reading, painting, and watching sports on tv. She was an avid college football fan but loved to watch sports of all kinds. Sue was able to converse knowledgeably about all her teams and loved a good game.
Preceding her in death are her parents, John Henry and Alma Brown Curtis; her sister, Gloria Curtis Ward; and her beloved husband of 51 years, Dr. Gaines Franklin Jones.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Dr. DeAnne Jones Terrell (Jeff); Gaines Lesley Jones (Donna); and Dr. Laurie Jones-Jackson (Jay); her grandchildren, Adam Vaughn (Ceci); Amanda Howard (A.J.); Natalie Martin (Neal); Nathan Terrell (Elizabeth); and Luke Jackson; her great-grandchildren, Adelyn Howard; Henry Martin; Ansley Howard; Corynne Martin; Mary Grace Martin; and Hayes Martin. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley Curtis; along with numerous nieces and nephews and others who Sue loved as deeply as family.
