Thomas Sydney Fernekes, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on September 30th 2026. He was born on November 10, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He lived a life defined by family, sports, and a willingness to always share exactly what he thought.
He is survived by his wife, Connie; his son, Nathan; daughter-in-law, Kati; and his three grandsons, Finn, Mays, and Scout; and two children from a previous marriage Tommy Fernekes and Kristen Fernekes.
Tom grew up in Pittsburgh and attended Oakmont High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He continued his education at Clarion State University, where he was the quarterback of the football team and majored in English. He later attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning his master’s degree in education.
Tom was married to his beloved wife, Connie Fernekes, for 43 years. The two met at UAB while working in the management training program. After dating for six years, they married in 1983 and went on to build a life and family together. Their 43 years of marriage were filled with family, sports, trips, and countless memories.
A lifelong sports fan, Tom proudly followed the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and UAB basketball. But his greatest joy in sports came from watching his son, Nathan, play and eventually coach baseball and football. He never missed a game. Whether keeping the scorebook or giving the umpires a little grief, Thomas was always an enthusiastic and familiar presence at the ballpark. He loved watching Nathan coach and took great pride in following his teams.
Outside of sports, Tom enjoyed reading and building model airplanes. He loved an honest take, a good conversation, and especially a good debate. Those who knew him well will remember his willingness to tell you exactly what he thought and his enjoyment of a spirited discussion.
Tom will be remembered most for his devotion to his family, his love of sports, his sharp opinions, and the countless games, conversations, and memories he shared with the people he loved. His presence in the stands and his unwavering support for his family will be deeply missed.
Visitation will be held at Southern Heritage Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 6, at 10:00 am. Followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the Homewood Athletic Foundation in Tom’s memory.
