

Tom Milton Wood, Sr. passed away on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at the age of 95. He was born on May 20, 1922 at Sayerton, Alabama. Following graduation from high school in 1940, he entered Auburn University under the school’s Cooperative Education Program.
During World War II, he entered the Army in December, 1942 serving overseas in the Pacific Arena at places such as New Herbredes, Guadalcanal, New Guinea, and Cebu in the Philippine Islands. After the war, he returned to Auburn and graduated in 1948. While at Auburn, he was a member and president of Delta Sigma Phi social fraternity and was selected for membership in Delta Sigma Pi Honorary Business fraternity.
Tom was employed by Alabama Power Company and retired in 1987. After retirement, he and his wife, Joyce became overseas travel coordinators for the Alabama Power Retired Energizers, traveling to 47 countries. They also presented the Company’s Safety-o-polis program to fourth grade classes in Jefferson and Shelby County school systems. They continued their volunteerism in their church, Oak Mountain Missions, and the “Meals-on-Wheels” program.
Tom was also a former member and president of the following organizations: Birmingham Jaycees, Downtown Optimist Club, Personnel Association of Birmingham, Reddy Talkers Toastmasters’ Club and Alabama Power Company Energizers.
Tom is preceded in death by his father, Max Wood, Sr. and mother, Olive Patterson Wood; as well as his sister, Martha, and brother, Max, Jr. Survivors, in addition to Joyce, his wife of 61 years, are three sons and their families: Dixon H. Nabors (Karen), Tom Milton Wood, Jr. (Jane) and Alan L. Wood (Jamie); grandchildren: Dixon H. Nabors, III (Aimee), Lindsey K. Irvin, Christy E. Walker (Aaron), Kelly Groenhof (Randy), James Alan Wood, Lauren E. Wood, Hayden O. Wood and Tom Milton Wood, III (Mara).
A memorial service will be held at 12:30pm on Monday, March 13, 2017 at Christ Church United Methodist at 5091 Caldwell Mill Rd, Birmingham, AL 35242. Visitation will be from 5pm until 7pm on Sunday at Southern Heritage Funeral Home, 475 Cahaba Valley Rd, Pelham, AL 35124. Burial will be at 2:45pm on Monday at Alabama National Cemetery, 3133 Hwy 119, Montevallo, AL 35115.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oak Mountain Mission Ministry, which was a ministry very close to Tom’s heart: 2699 Pelham Parkway, Pelham, AL 35124.
