Dr. Tommy Emerson Simpkins Jr.

November 3, 1936 – July 5, 2021
Obituary of Dr. Tommy Emerson Simpkins Jr.
IN THE CARE OF

Southern Heritage Funeral Home & Cemetery

Dr. Thomas Emerson Simpkins, Jr., 84, resident of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away July 5, 2021 at home surrounded by his family.

Dr. Simpkins was born in Nashville, Tennessee on November 3, 1936 to Dr. Thomas Emerson Simpkins, Sr. and Katherine Jennings Simpkins. He graduated from Tennessee Tech (1957) and the University of Tennessee Medical School (1960).

He married Mary Marguerite Royal in 1959, and completed his medical residency in Otolaryngology at the University of Alabama Birmingham (1967). A captain in the U.S. Army, he lived the remainder of his life with his family in the Birmingham area and maintained a private practice at Princeton Hospital.

A life long fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers football team, he was also an avid golfer and tennis player for many years. He and his wife have been members of the Independent Presbyterian Church on Highland Avenue for more than 30 years, where he served as a Deacon and Elder.

Dr. Simpkins is survived by his wife Marguerite, son Thomas Emerson Simpkins, III (Holly), daughter Catherine Anne Simpkins (Sandy), son David Royal Simpkins (Tom), grandsons Michael Simpkins and Matthew Simpkins, sister Kay Simpkins Duncan (Don) and sister Anne Laine Goad (Jerry).

He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his sister Patricia Simpkins Garman (Richard).

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the Independent Presbyterian Church Food Pantry.

Dr. Simpkins was a loving husband to his wife and father to his children, and a caring doctor to his patients. He had a kind manner and gentle way of speaking but was also an expert in the loving sarcastic wit that is the hallmark of the Simpkins family and that remained with him until the end. We miss you so much.
