Tommye Davis Lunceford, 92, of Birmingham, Alabama passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. Born July 31, 1927 in Hackleburg, Alabama, she was the third child of seven born to Willis and Carrie Davis.
Tommye was a kind, generous, loving mother and grandmother. Her hobbies were varied and she excelled at nearly all of them. As a woman of many talents, she enjoyed painting, sewing, gardening, cooking gourmet meals, playing bridge, and golfing with friends. Additionally, she was an avid traveler having crossed off all continents but Antarctica, and she required all of her grandchildren to have a passport by the age of 12 for their first overseas trip.
A devout Christian, Tommye was a member of Heritage Place Church of Christ. While healthy, she frequently furnished the Sunday altar with gorgeous floral displays to brighten the sanctuary. With a keen sense of style and design, she will be remembered for her impeccable taste and warm hospitality to friends and family alike.
Tommye is survived by her loving husband of 40 years, James O. “Jim” Lunceford; sister, Kathleen Pope of Hackleburg; and three sons, Brent Burleson (Catherine) of Greenville, South Carolina, Bob Burleson of Birmingham, and Mike Burleson of Montgomery, Alabama. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, Kate Burleson of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Brooks Burleson of Charlotte, North Carolina, Paige Burleson of Avon, Colorado, and Davis Burleson of Birmingham; and step-children, Marsha Robinson and Tim Lunceford of Birmingham.
Tommye was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Mary Jule Burleson of Montgomery; two sisters, Marguerite Tyra of Hackleburg and Dorothy Abner of Sylacauga, Alabama; and brothers, Joe, Jack and Pete Davis of Hackleburg.
The family would like to thank Laronda Dates, Sheray Dates, Ayanna Ramsey, Ashantah Gordon and Matilda Steel for their wonderful care of Tommye over the last few years.
The family will greet friends from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama, immediately followed by A Service of Remembrance for Tommye at 2 p.m. at the funeral home's chapel.
