Virginia Jenkins Shackelford

December 6, 1925 - July 3, 2015

Virginia Jenkins Shackelford, 89, of Vestavia Hills, Alabama passed away on Friday, July 3, 2015 and is now with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was born on December 6, 1925 in Birmingham, Alabama and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jess I. Shackelford, Jr. She was the youngest of 10 children born to Maggie Hoyle Jenkins and Meredith Gilmore Jenkins. Virginia was predeceased by her parents, her two brothers, and her seven sisters.

Survivors include Virginia’s three children, Judy Shackelford of Hoover, Alabama, Larry Shackelford (Sally) of Helena, Alabama, and Kathy Render (Allen) of Hoover; four grandchildren, Jeff Shackelford (Jenni) of Helena, Michael Shackelford of Austin, Texas, Matthew Render of Hoover, and Katie Render of Hoover; twin great-granddaughters, Logan and Libby Shackelford of Helena; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Virginia has been a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church since 1964 and worked in their Mother's Day Out program for many years. She was a member of the Vestavia Hills, Hoover, and Mountain Brook art associations, where she participated in shows displaying media in oil, acrylic and water color.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, Alabama. Burial will follow in Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Samaritan’s Purse or the American Heart Association.
