Walter Elmore McMahon, Jr. passed away on Monday, May 21. Walt was a very proud, honest, reliable and giving man, full of integrity. He wanted nothing more than to pass these traits on to his children and grandchildren. Walt loved his mother and grandmother, the Lord, his family, his church, travelling with his beloved wife Fran, his dog Molly, and watching sports, especially Georgia Tech athletics. Walt was born on July 12, 1940 in Petersburg, Virginia. He served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard. After attending Georgia Tech, he moved back home to care for his family, and graduated from the University of Richmond. His life course was set when he met and married Frances Elizabeth Wingo McMahon, and they were happily married for over 55 years. Walt took great pride in providing for Fran and his family, and they lived in many places before settling down in Birmingham, when he accepted a job with Alabama Gas Company (Energen Corporation). He dedicated over thirty years of service to Energen before retiring in 2013. Walt and Fran were faithful members of First Baptist Church of Pelham, where he loved extending a warm hand on Sunday mornings as a greeter. Mr. McMahon is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Iris McMahon, and his wife, Fran. He is survived by his son, Bob McMahon (Wendy); daughters, Terri Ray (Phillip) and Susan Ward (Steve); and grandchildren, Noah McMahon, Nicholas McMahon, Andrew Ray, and Elizabeth Ward; and a host of cousins. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29 at Southern Heritage Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at a visitation beginning at 1:00. The family would like to extend their gratitude to his dear friends Kay Wilburn and David Woodruff, and his cousin, Anita Ford, for their kindness and support given to both Walt and Fran during their later years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Walt’s memory to First Baptist Church of Pelham, 2867 Pelham Parkway, Pelham, AL 35124.
