William Douglas Armstrong

A lifelong resident of Cahaba Heights, Doug later made his home in Shelby County. He was the beloved father of Stacie Mullins (Sean) of Alabaster, and Harrison Armstrong and Anna Armstrong, both of Vestavia Hills. Doug was the doting grandfather of Gavyn Noss of Tuscaloosa and Gracelyn Rice of Pelham. He was also a cherished brother to Kenneth Armstrong (Chelsea), Nancy Goodwin (Houston, TX), and Robyn Shultz (Pelham), and a treasured uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Doug learned the value of hard work at a young age and began his lifelong career as a talented tradesman. He built a respected reputation as a General Contractor and Subcontractor, admired for his skill, dedication, and integrity. Doug was drafted into the United States Army, where he honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. His service remained one of the defining honors of his life, and he carried that pride with him every day.

After returning home, Doug continued serving his community with the same commitment he showed his country. He volunteered with the Cahaba Heights Fire Department, later earning his EMT-Paramedic certification, and devoted more than twelve years to protecting and caring for others. Doug’s life was marked by a deep sense of responsibility and compassion—qualities that those who knew him witnessed daily.

If you asked Doug what his greatest achievement was, he would answer without hesitation: his children. Being a father was the joy and purpose of his life. After retirement, he found tremendous fulfillment in spending time with other veterans, such as his close friends Kenny Howard and Jack Schultz. He enjoyed playing pool on Sunday mornings and riding his motorcycle. His kindness, wit, and steady presence made him a man who his friends could count on, and strangers could remember.

He was a wonderful son, brother, father, and grandfather—a man whose heart for others will continue to inspire those who loved him. Doug will be deeply missed and remembered always.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Alice J. Glass, and William Wesley Armstrong Jr. The family will receive friends for a Celebration of Life at Courtyard 280 on Sunday, November 23rd from 12pm-4pm, and Memorial Services at Southern Heritage Monday, November 24th starting at 5pm for visitation and service following at 6pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in his name to either St. Jude (for the purpose of finding more cures for more kids) or the Birmingham Veterans Association Medical Center for indented use of dementia research.
