Dale Thomas Hoag, a devoted family man, skilled craftsman, and selfless community servant, passed away on September 4, 2025, in Birmingham, AL, at the age of 75. Originally from Victor, NY, Dale had called Pell City, AL, home since 2018.
He was predeceased by his parents, Gordon and Dorothy Hoag, and his brother, Scott Hoag. Dale was a loving husband to his beloved wife of 54 years, Judy, and a proud father to both his son, Michael Hoag of Atlanta, GA, and daughter, Jill (Chestley) Harmon of Pell City, AL. He cherished his role as “Poppa” to eight grandchildren: Mia (Brennan) Woods, Sydney Woods, Kristin Kurzejeski, Tyler Kurzejeski, Trey Kurzejeski, Cannon Harmon, Sawyer Harmon, and Cord Harmon. He is also survived by his brother, David Hoag, along with several nieces and nephews.
Dale lived a life marked by craftsmanship and ingenuity. Following in his father’s footsteps, he honed his skills as a talented carpenter and woodworker early in life, and was even a mechanic and a stock car driver. His technical brilliance shone through during his 26-year career at Southco, Inc., where he built machines to manufacture industrial products, solving complex mechanical challenges with ease and precision.
As a dedicated public servant in western New York, Dale spent over 25 years as a Critical Care Tech / EMT, firefighter, and later assistant fire chief, where he selflessly served those in need, responding to emergencies with courage and compassion.
An avid HAM radio enthusiast, Dale connected with people across the globe for 40 years under his call sign, KA2UDH. His love for the hobby fostered countless friendships, and his signal now rests as a “silent key,” a tribute to his passing in the radio community.
Known for his generous spirit and readiness to help anyone in need, Dale leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and craftsmanship that will endure in the hearts of all who knew him. The family will honor Dale’s memory in an open memorial service at the Kilgroe Funeral Home in Pell City, AL on Saturday, September 13th from 2pm to 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, and in honor of Dale’s love for his many Border Collies, the family kindly requests donations to Glen Highland Farm Border Collie Rescue, 6699 Fox Centre Pkwy, Gloucester, VA 23061, or online at www.glenhighlandfarm.com.
