Born to Charles Edward Rozelle and Montine Dickinson Rozelle on May 22, 1945, Hal was raised and lived the vast majority of his life in Lincoln, Alabama. He graduated from and was salutatorian at Lincoln High School and later received his Bachelor of Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in Structural Engineering, from Auburn University. He met the love of his life, Ava Harrison, at a Lincoln High School football game, eventually marrying her on September 12, 1970, at Lincoln United Methodist Church. As a young adult, Hal was very active, enjoying hunting, fishing, golfing, playing basketball and softball, and coaching his daughters’ softball teams. He also had a musical side, playing the clarinet in high school and singing in church choirs. He loved artists like Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Patsy Cline, and John Prine. Aside from working as a structural engineer for various companies, he also farmed for many years, growing crops like soybeans, wheat, and bermudagrass and raising broiler chickens and cows—with a pet goat, cats, and dogs along the way.
Hal was known and loved for his dry and sarcastic wit, his ability to help his children and later, his grandchildren, with their math homework, and his generosity and selflessness towards anyone who expressed a need. His keen sense of humor and story-telling abilities were always a highlight at the dinner table, golf outings, and family reunions.
No public funeral services will be held. Memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared with the family at www.kilgroefh.com and donations in memory of Hal may be made to Farm Sanctuary: https://www.farmsanctuary.org/
