

Helen was born in Attalla , AL on November 15, 1928, to the Rev. Laney Bain and Floretta Aders Bain. Their family soon moved to Pell City and she attended schools here and graduated from Pell City High School in 1946.
She married her high school sweetheart Billy Ray Purdy in 1950 at The First Baptist Church of Pell City. They raised their three children here and lived on Lake Logan Martin Lake for most of their lives. After Bill's passing Helen was blessed with a marriage to Bill Scott and currently to Paul Pope.
She loved to watch the Atlanta Braves, never missing a game if possible, to watch. One of her greatest enjoyments was to watch her grandchildren and great grandchildren play whatever sports they were involved in at the time, especially baseball.
Her greatest legacy she leaves, however, was her dedication to her family as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church for over 70 years and a proud member of the Faith and Charity Sunday School class. From Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Teacher, to serving food to the elderly and bereaved, Helen, tirelessly served in tons of different ways even after she became unable to attend services.
Helen Bain Purdy Pope was preceded in death by her parents Reverend William Laney Bain and Floretta Aders Bain. Her husband’s Billy Ray Purdy and William Clarence Scott, Jr. Her daughter Lynne Purdy, and siblings William Laney Bain Jr., Betty Singleton(Bill) and Reverend Jim Bain.
She is survived by her husband Paul Pope. Sons, Grant Purdy(Robin), Jim Purdy(Rhonda), and brother Bob Bain(Margaret), sister-in-law, Betty Bain. Grandchildren, Bill Purdy(Gloriane), Brock Purdy(Hayley), Jay Purdy(Jeanne), Lindsay Thompson(Michael), Haley Williams(Justin), Adam Purdy(Alyssa), Helen Clarey, and Katie Purdy. 10 Great Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Helen's celebration and memorial service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2025 at the First Baptist Church of Pell City. Visitation will be from 11AM until 12:30PM. Service to follow at 12:30PM. Intermittent at Valley Hill Cemetery in Cropwell, AL.
Pallbearers will be Jim Purdy, Jay Purdy, Adam Purdy, Bill Purdy, Brock Purdy, and Dana Merrymon.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Gage Palmer, Jayce Thompson, Sully Williams, Cooper Purdy, and Brooks Purdy.
In Lieu of flowers, the family request donations be given to First Baptist Church Building Fund or ministry of your choice.
