James Alden Goldstein (Jimmy) passed away on November 2,2025 in Embry’s Bend near Lincoln, Alabama. He lived a long and meaningful life, devoted to his family, his friends and his beloved animals and his beloved land.
Born on March 5, 1934, in Embry’s Bend, an area settled by his great-great grandfather, Elijah Embry, in .1848, he. was the only son of Margaret Collins Embry Goldstein and Samuel Jacob Goldstein. He grew up surrounded by his three sisters, Yetta Bart
(Theodore Joseph Ziolkowski), Sarah Avisar Lichtman (Yaacov Avisar, Joseph Lichtman,) and Barbara (Robert Bonfield). After graduating from Talladega County High School in Lincoln, Alabama, Jimmy elected to begin a career that he enjoyed throughout his lifetime- farming. He started as a small farmer with a little red tractor, raising hay and soybeans. He soon became highly recognized by large seed companies for the quality of his soybeans that they sought to purchase.
Perhaps influenced by his great grandparents, Elijah Embry and Jeremiah Collins, both known for their acquisition of large amounts of land, Jimmy bought property near his own whenever the opportunity presented and soon owned large acreage. He began to acquire cattle and became the owner of a medium-sized herd.
Jimmy and his friends enjoyed game hunting, and each year held a quail hunt in addition to deer hunting. He was a member of a local hunt club and helped with the club's organization and management. Jimmy was held in high esteem by his neighbors and friends for his honesty, directness and his readiness to help others. He had an ability to learn quickly, read constantly and retained large amounts of information about everything from farming to genealogy. He retained his clear, logical mind up until his last moments.
In addition to his sisters, Barbara and Sarah, Jimmy is survived by three nieces, Edith Barkai (Ehud Barkai), Margaret Cecelia Thurston (Bob Thurston), and Susan Bonfield (David Schimel). Surviving nephews are Jan Ziolkowski, Eric Ziolkowski, David Avisar, and Shai Ben Zion Lichtman.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Lincoln City Cemetery, 370 Griffin Ave. East, Lincoln, AL 35096.
