Mrs. Myers is preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Walter J. Myers. She is also preceded in death by her mother, Emma Lou Cash Whaley, her father, Dawkins Whaley, her two youngest sons, Phillip Myers and Kerry Myers, and her sister, Violet (Bobby) Coker. Her cousins, Katherine (Kitty) Sweeney and Virginia (Ginny) Shows, were also like sisters to Merle.
Merle is lovingly remembered by her oldest son, Danny (Linda) Myers and her grandchildren: Rebecca (Brett) Leslie, Brandon (Courtney) Myers, Jared (Lynn) Myers, and Jance Myers. Merle had six great-grandchildren whom she adored: Isabella Myers, Ryland Myers, Elizabeth Leslie, Hudson Myers, James Leslie, and Eliana Myers. Amber (Travis) Henninger and Brandi (Jason) Hall were also like granddaughters to her.
Merle Myers was born in Centre, AL on June 18, 1928. As a child, Merle loved to play with her sister Bobbie with their Shirley Temple and Gone with the Wind paper dolls, and they enjoyed listening to the Grand Ole’ Opry on the radio. She also affectionately talked about her childhood dog, a collie named Captain. Merle’s mom and dad owned a restaurant in Gadsden, AL, and Merle learned to cook by watching her mother, Emma, who was known for her peach and apple pies. At the age of 22, Merle married her sweetheart, Walter J. Myers in Montgomery, AL, on November 11, 1950.
Merle and Walter attended college together where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree from Troy State University. She was a devoted wife and mother, supporting her family as they traveled and lived oversees and across the country with the United States Navy and the United States Air Force. Merle enjoyed square dancing, bowling, and spending time with her family. She was famous for her desserts and large family meals during the holidays. Merle Myers was a member of Niceville Assembly of God in Niceville, FL. In her later years, after returning to Alabama, she returned to Coosa Valley Church of God in Cropwell, AL.
The visitation and memorial service will be held at Coosa Valley Church of God on Saturday, June 6, 2020. The public visitation will be from 9:15 am until 10:30 am, with the service to follow at 10:30 am and will be officiated by Rev. Andy Lambert. Merle Myers will be buried at Forest Hills Cemetery in Montgomery, AL with a small graveside service for the family on Saturday, June 6, 2020 at 2:30 pm.
