Myrtha McKnight Roe

Myrtha McKnight Roe was born on July 14, 1934 in Dothan, AL to parents, Hubert and Mable McKnight. When she was a young girl the family moved to Pell City, AL. She resided in Pell City the remainder of her life, until her passing on July 18, 2026 at the age of 92.

All of her school years were spent in Pell City and she graduated from Pell City High School in 1952. The first day of school, she met her lifelong friend, Peggy "Robertson" Kendrick.

She completed a short secretarial course after high school. Her work ethic was unmatched. Over the years she has been employed by the St. Clair County Board of Education, Secretary at Pell City High School and Duran Jr. High School, Bowman's Building Mart, and the St. Clair County Probate Office. She retired from the Probate Office in October of 2018 at the age of 84. She was also the bookkeeper for Town and Country, under the ownership of Leon Clements, for 30 years.

She loved her work, but her greatest joy was to be "Granny", "Granny Roe" and "Old Granny". She was not only "Granny" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, but to their friends and anyone who needed a "Granny".

She loved to bake and cook and she loved to share it with others. Countless family and friends have benefited from her generosity.

She was a strong force in this world and our world was better for it.

She is survived by her daughter, Mable (Peaches) Roe Rodgers and her husband, Arthur; six grandchildren, James Rodgers, Jade Rodgers, Kate Boswell, Keaton Rodgers, Chris Ponder and Devin Ponder; six great-grandchildren, Beth Rodgers, Taylor Rodgers, Reed Rodgers, Carley Boswell, Silas Boswell and Nathan Boswell; and she was "Aunt Tilda" to her many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in passing by her husband, James Obie Roe; her son, Johnnie Roe; her parents, Hubert McKnight and Mable McKnight; her brothers, Joe McKnight and Louie McKnight; her sisters, Winnie Skelton and Maxine Abbott.

Funeral services will be on Monday, July 20, 2026 at 2:00pm, with Rev. Bill Gray officiating, at the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, with the family to receive friends from 1:00pm until the service time at the church. Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Pallbearers will be James Rodgers, Clark Layton, Danny Abbott, Matt Abbott, Jim Skelton and Louie McKnight.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Myrtha McKnight Roe's name to the St. Clair County Boys Ranch, the Big Oak Ranch, or Compassion International.
