He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Wanda Mathis; three daughters, Dina (David) Oliver, Amy (Wesley) Lewis, and Alisha (Sean) Slay; eight grandchildren, Benjamin (Katie) Oliver, Breanna (Luke) Carr, Jacob (Jada) Lewis, Corey Lewis, Sadie Lewis, Emma Slay, Brody Slay, and Jackson Slay; five great-grandchildren, Rowan Oliver, Ocie Oliver, Lovelyn Oliver, Kasey Oliver, and Roger Theodore Carr; and two sisters, Janice Dunaway and Carolyn Hathcock.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Jessie and Anna Mathis; son, David Scott Mathis; brother, Benny Mathis; and two sisters, Vivian Winslett and Betty Hughes.
A visitation for Mr. Mathis will be held Saturday, December 30, 2023 at Coosa Valley Baptist Church in Cropwell, beginning at 1:00pm with the service at 3:00pm. He will be laid to rest in the Coosa Valley Baptist Cemetery.
