Many have chosen him to become their brother, grandfather, dad, uncle, friend, or mentor because of the relationship that they had with him.
He graduated from Lanett HS, Southern Union, Auburn, Jacksonville and attended Troy. His coaching career began at Auburn HS then continued at Lanett, Pisgah, Jacksonville and Wedowee. Pell City became his coaching home for 20 years and the teaching of Drivers Ed for 28 years. Over the years, close friendships were developed. They still comment on his wearing ties, how much he loved Mrs. Spangenberg's lunchroom cookies, and how his drivers ed students loved learning how to drive through a drive thru. He was also known for wearing ties to school and for having a very neat appearance. His record books and handwriting were always neat.
He strived to live his life by the Christian principles and the training that he received as an Eagle Scout.
W.T. was a member of NHBC for 44 years and a deacon. He participated in visiting prisons for about 30 years with Ala volunteers in Corrections. He enjoyed being a Chaplain, especially performing wedding ceremonies and premarital counseling.
Many have seen his pen and ink pictures and watercolor paintings. He was a self-taught meticulous and detailed artist.
His passion for exercising and working out with weights began in high school at age 16. Walking, running, and exercising became a joy throughout his life. After being evaluated by a physiatrist, he was told that his physical ability was in the class of over the 90% range for people at his age of 74.
His life centered around his love for his family. His family and friends loved to hear him sing his favorite songs. His favorite song for over 50 years was “This is the day. This is the Day that the Lord Hath Made. We will Rejoice and Be Glad in it”.
He used to love to talk like Donald Duck for the children. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed interacting with people, especially a group of coach's and the Huguley gang, a group of childhood friends.
“God's Got This” were words spoken even prior to his open-heart surgery in 2020. The surgical team allowed him to pray for them before the surgery began.
His constant words were, “God loves me, and I love God.”
At age 74, W.T. and Gail made a commitment, to help others want to go to heaven. Their commitment will be continued.
