Born in Waterloo on December 15, 1917 he was the son of the late John and Clara (Myers) Marshall. He was raised and educated there and married his high school sweetheart Catherine (Velte) on September 2, 1938. They moved to Newark, NY where he was manager of the A&P at the age of 20. He later became manger of Penn Yan’s A&P for 20 years. He and his wife owned and operated Marshall’s IGA Foodliner from 1957-1970. The store was then sold to Mobil Oil Co. In 1976 he worked for Upstate Transfer Consortium as a school bus driver. He then became the bus dispatcher for the next 6 years after which time he permanently retired.

Fred was an active member of the Penn Yan community through his involvement with the Kiwanis and Ellsworth Hose Co. from the early 1940’s until his death. He was Penn Yan’s Fire Chief from 1954-1956. He also was active at St. Michael’s Catholic Church serving as an usher and greeter for many years. He enjoyed being a member of the Lakeside Country Club for over 50 years. He was president of the country club for 2 years, a member of their Borad of Directors for 2 terms, and chairman of the House Committee for many years. Fred enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and entertaining. His family and friends fondly referred to their home as “Club Marshall”.

He was predeceased by his loving wife and companion, Catherine of 71 years and his son Frederick L. Marshall, Jr. He is survived by his two daughters Barbara (Ronald) Brown and Bonnie Davis. Also surviving are his six grandchildren Scott (Elaine) Brown, Kimberly (John) Chappo, Suzanne (Greg) Metelsky, Pamela Davis, Brian (Diana) Davis, and Kenneth and David O’Brien-Davis. He has six great-grandchildren Tara Chappo, Brandon Chappo, Jacqueline Hennes, Brett Hennes, Joshua Brown, and Logan Brown.

Fred wanted all of his many, wonderful friends to know he was dying of a broken heart. And although he will miss you all dearly he is looking forward to being reunited with his “sweetie”.

He was a wonderful man - I knew him and Catherine growing up in PY. I always remember what a kind heart he had. May he rest in peace and now him and Catherine are reunited. . . .that's so special.

Barb, Bonnie and Family. Steve and I often thought of the great times that we had with Aunt Catherine and Uncle Fred. Swimming and partying it was a joy to be around them and to call them family. We are both very sorry for your loss and please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Bonnie, Barb and Families -
We are two 'voices from the past" - Bob Cornell and Gwen Fairbrother, originally from Penn Yan and now living in Central PA. As you remember, my dad, Gene Fairbrother and your Dad were good friends. Your brother, Freddie and I were also great buddies for years. So many of us in the Class of '66 spent a lot of time at your house up on Court St. Your Mom and Dad always welcomed all of us into your home to 'hang out'.
I remember your Dad's smiling face at the IGA. He always had time to stop and talk regardless of how busy he was. I lost my Dad much too early. You were lucky to have your wonderful father for such a long time. Now he'll be with your lovely Mom and my good bud, Freddie.

Our best to you all at this difficult time.
