

Algirt Michael Yots, 78, our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died Friday, December 3 after a lengthy illness. He was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on June 7, 1943. He is preceded in death by his parents, Algirt and Eleanor Yots and infant sister Judith. He graduated from Verona High School where he excelled athletically and academically as valedictorian. Mickey attended Lehigh University on a football scholarship and graduated with high honors. He was awarded a fellowship and earned his PhD. at the University of Arizona.
Mike's career path took him to the newly established University of West Florida as an associate professor of English. He was a cofounder of the Panhandler, a student literary magazine and served as its editor. He also penned the words to UWF's Alma Mater. As an author, he published a poetry collection called WHAT I SAID TO PROVE I WAS SANE. His poems appeared in numerous literary journals. In 1989, he was a recipient of the Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. He was appointed Director of UWF's center in Kobe, Japan. Upon his return, he was appointed Director of International Studies until his retirement. Mickey is remembered by countless students throughout the world as an excellent and passionate teacher.
Mike enjoyed cruising and traveling with his wife Arlene to explore Asia, Europe, Australia, and North and South America. He was an excellent chef and created scrumptious meals to which his family and friends looked forward. Mickey also enjoyed running in many 10K races and marathons. He was also an avid golfer and proud of his two holes-in-one.
Kind of heart, generous to a fault, respected and loved by all, Mickey leaves behind his loving wife Arlene of fifty-six years, sons Christian, Adrian (Rachael), daughter Holly Walsh (Kyle), and grandchildren: Hayden, Kelton, Cairo, Ronan, Pierce, Willow, Christopher, Harry, Reagan, and Ryan.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church, where he was a parishioner for fifty-one years, on Monday, December 20th, 2021 at 11:00 AM, preceded by a Rosary at 10:30 AM. Reception will immediately follow in the Giri Room. Private Interment will be at Bayview Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Alfred Washburn Center or charity of choice.
