Al Brandon, another member of the Greatest Generation, has passed away at the age of 92. He will be missed by his loving family and friends. His sense of humor and his smile will always be remembered!
His 40 years of military service began when he joined the navy at age 15, and at age 16 serving as a gunner flying in B24s out of England. He served in both the United States Navy and Army, retiring as a CW-04 from the Army.
After the war, he was a businessman and joined many civic groups, such as the Shriners. He was an avid Alabama fan! He was also a member of Myrtle Grove Baptist Church.
Education was important to him! He received a degree from Troy University. He was also instrumental in helping himself and other underage vets receive their long overdue high school diplomas.
Veterans of Underage Military Service (VUMS) was formed in 1991 honoring those who entered the military at an early age, some as young as 12. Mr. Brandon promoted VUMS and his story is in one of the two published books, America’s Youngest Warriors, Vol. 1 and 2.
Al said that the highest honor came from having young ones say, “Thank you for your service.”
Services will be held at Oak Lawn Funeral Home on Friday, December 7, 2018 at 10:30 am, the family will receive friends one hour prior. Burial will take place at Barrancas National Cemetery immediately after the services.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a Shriner's Hospital of your choice.
