

Audrey F. Wakefield passed away peacefully on June 5, 2013 while surrounded by her family that she loved and who dearly loved her. Friends and family who knew her said she was a generous, loving and caring lady. Audrey was born in Brooklyn, NY on Feb 2, 1925 to Harry and Rachel (Frey) Fischler. She moved with her family to Pensacola in 1941 and graduated from Pensacola High School the following year. While living in the Myrtle Grove area she met the love of her life, Gerry, who was on active duty with the U.S. Navy. They married in 1943 but were soon separated by the needs of the Navy during World War II. Following the war they settled in the Navy Point area of Warrington where they raised their family. Audrey worked as a bookkeeper for the Linen Department Store in downtown Pensacola in the 1960's and later worked at, and retired from, the George Stone Technical Center in 1990.
Following her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering her time for Covenant Hospice's annual garage sale for seven years where she was in charge of the Linens Department. She also volunteered with Senior Friends at West Florida Hospital for ten years. Audrey and Gerry left Navy Point in 1986 and moved to the "Farm" near Saufley Field where they built their dream house and grew pecan trees and blueberries. She became an avid gardener and loved watching the many birds that visited her numerous feeders. She enjoyed sharing her home with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Audrey loved to travel and made several trips to Europe with her sister, Joan, and her daughter-in-law Gloria. In addition, she and Gerry spent many wonderful years traveling around the United States & Canada with the Elderhostel/Road Scholar tour group. She was pre-deceased by Gerry in 2003. Audrey is survived by a daughter, Meriwyn and son-n-law George Phillips of Inverness, FL; two sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Cindy (Sims) Wakefield of Pensacola, and Stan and Gloria (Roberson) Wakefield of St. Augustine, FL; four grandchildren, Marci and Mark Hilton of Calgary, Alberta, Andrew and Lynne Phillips of Melbourne Beach, FL; and Kimberly and Dylan Wakefield of Pensacola; two great-grandsons, Tyler Maxwell and Noah Hilton; her sister, Joan (Fischler) MacCrone of Huntsville, AL; and many loving extended family members and friends.
A memorial service for Audrey will be held Tues June 11 at 7:00 pm at Oak Lawn Funeral Home,
619 New Warrington Road. Interment will be at Barrancas National Cemetery on a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, Audrey's family would appreciate contributions be made to Covenant Hospice at 2001 N. Palafox St., Pensacola, FL 32501.
