

Captain Barbara A. Lyons, U.S. Navy Nurse Corps (Retired), age 76, of Pensacola, FL, passed away July 9, 2012. She was born March 14, 1936 in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Timothy John Lyons and Laura Keilty Lyons.
Captain Lyons graduated in 1956 from Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing and from Boston University in 1969 with a BA Degree in Science. She served a long and distinguished career in nursing leadership positions at Naval hospitals throughout the United States and abroad from February 3, 1960 until her retirement as the Director of Nursing Service, Naval Hospital Pensacola on April 30, 1988. Some of those tours of duty include: Naval Air Station, Argentia, Newfoundland, Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA, NAS Bermuda, NAS Patuxent River, MD, Naval Hospital Portsmouth, VA, Naval Hospital Jacksonville, FL, and Naval Hospital Pensacola. Her decorations include: National Defense Ribbon, Navy Commendation (2 awards) and the Meritorious Service medal. She was a member of Gulf Coast Navy Nurse Corps Association.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John K. Lyons and Richard K. Lyons. Survivors include sisters-in-law, Ann V. Lyons of West Warwick, RI and Virginia D. Lyons of Mercerville, NJ; nephews, Robert J. Lyons of Murfreesboro, TN and Steven M. Lyons of Holmdel, NJ. Other family members include her great nephews and nieces, Matthew, Kyle, Sean, Jason, Kelly and Lily Grace.
A Funeral Mass will be Monday July 16, 2012 at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 9:30 AM until the service hour.
