Catherine Marie Johnson Melvin Amoss was born on March 16, 1939, in Iron Mountain, Michigan to Frederick and Katherine Johnson. As a baby she was very sweet and was affectionately known as Cookie, a name that stuck for the rest of her life. When she was 3 years old she and her three older siblings were adopted by other families in the area, after her father died and her mother could no longer take care of the children. She was adopted by Audrey and Jack Melvin and raised near Racine, Wisconsin. The family relocated to Florida following her graduation from high school and her father's retirement. She was proud to have worked as a receptionist and a secretary at that time, and met her future husband when a friend set up a blind date. She married John Wyatt Amoss in 1962, and they had two sons. She attended college when her children were older, and completed student teaching a kindergarten class, but did not pursue teaching beyond that. She enjoyed sailing with her husband after they retired to Pensacola in 1983. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and visiting family members. She was a consummate homemaker and carefully attended to all details of domestic life. She was active in her church and enjoyed many friendships throughout her life. It could be said that she never met a stranger.
She is survived by two sons, John (Margaret) and Jack (Joset); three grandsons, John, Robert, and Jacob; sister, Nancy Johnson; her older brother Fred Spanton; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to a local animal rescue organization as she always loved dogs.
Celebration of Life Service will be held at Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel, 3351 Scenic Highway, Pensacola, FL 32503 on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 10:00 am.
