1933-2025
Eileen Regina (Nummey) Forsyth, 91, of Pensacola, FL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Vitas Hospice at West Florida, where she had been admitted that day.
She was born December 27, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. She moved to Caldwell, NJ at the age of ten and completed high school there. Discouraged by her father from going to college, she completed nurse’s training at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan, NY and became a registered nurse. She later earned a Bachelors Degree from Kean College, NJ and a Masters in Public Health from University of West Florida, as well as her Realtor’s license.
She met the love of her life, LTJG (at the time, eventually Captain) Robert Joseph Forsyth, USN of Staten Island, NY at a New Year’s Eve party and they married six months later in July 1955. The next 23 years were a whirlwind of far-flung Navy duty stations (Monterrey and San Diego CA, Washington DC, Gaeta Italy, Rota Spain, and Ft. Monmouth, NJ), all while raising four children, working part-time, going to school, and enduring separations while her husband deployed to Alaska, Vietnam, and the Mediterranean. After the Navy they made a home in Red Bank, NJ until they retired to Perdido Bay in 1993.
Eileen was best known for her indomitable spirit and willingness to volunteer wherever there was a need. She was a long-time volunteer nurse at Our Lady of Angels, St. Joseph Medical Clinic downtown. She was an active and dedicated member of the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit parish, serving in several ministries. She loved flowers and making things beautiful, eventually becoming a flower show judge. She also loved traveling, sitting at the beach, and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her loving and beloved husband after 60 years together, by her parents William and Helen Nummey, and sisters, Virginia Pellett, and Helen Mitschele.
She is survived by her children Robert Joseph Jr., Brian A., Stuart T., and Nora M. (Jacobsen); eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, 1 November, 2025 at the Catholic Church of the Holy Spirit on Gulf Beach Highway, followed by a reception in the Family Life Center. She will be buried with her husband at Barrancas National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in her memory to Our Lady of Angels, St. Joseph Medical Clinic, 131 W Intendencia St, PO Box 626, Pensacola, FL 32502. https://www.stjosephclinic.com
