October 11, 1921 - October 15, 2020
On October 15, 2020, Evelyn Nancy Bomar Hastings died peacefully at the age of 99. Born in Memphis in 1921, Evelyn graduated from Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, Tennessee. It was there that Evelyn met Samuel Crass Hastings, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Following a courtship which included many dates at the local soda fountain and archery lessons and competition, the two were married on September 8, 1941, by N. B. Hardeman. Sam and Evelyn moved to Pensacola shortly after marrying and called the area home for over 60 years.
Evelyn was a talented cook and loved making meals for her family and friends. She spent many hours in her backyard garden, and the resulting preserves and desserts were enjoyed by many. A welcoming hostess, Evelyn always had everyone's favorite dishes waiting on the table, often alongside a bowl of fresh camellia blossoms from Sam's garden. "Granny", as she was called by many, was a talented artist, seamstress and quilter. She created many special pieces that are cherished by her family. She was also quite skilled at card games and loved working crossword puzzles.
A woman of strong faith and conviction, Evelyn trusted in the graciousness of the Lord throughout her life. East Hill Church of Christ was an important part of Evelyn's life, as were churches in Bagdad, FL and Andalusia, AL, where Sam preached for several years.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Samuel Hastings. She is survived by her 3 sons and daughters-in-law: William "Bill" and Elaine Hastings of Cantonment, Florida; Robert "Bob" and Diana Hastings of Prattville, Alabama; and Phillip Hastings and Marty Eberhardt of San Diego, California. Evelyn was known as "Granny" to 6 grandchildren: Wayne Hastings, Brian Hastings, Kim Hastings Guilbeau, Rachel Hastings McGrath, Paul Schramski Towers and Samuel Schramski. Additionally, Evelyn has 8 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express gratitude to Nila Dufva and the dedicated staff at Laurelwood Assisted Living Facility in Cantonment, FL for providing excellent care for Evelyn during the final chapter of her long life.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in memory of Evelyn to Laurelwood Assisted Living Facility, Emerald Coast Hospice, or Escambia County Search and Rescue.
Evelyn will be laid to rest at Bayview Memorial Gardens in Pensacola on November 7, 2020, in a brief service that will be Live Streamed and archived on the Facebook page of Bayview Fisher-Pou Chapel.
