Dr. Gail Ann Leighton, 78, of Navarre, Florida, passed away on March 27, 2026. Born September 2, 1947, Gail was a devoted, accomplished woman whose life was marked by quiet dedication, steadfast purpose, and deep love for those closest to her.
Gail devoted more than 25 years to education as a teacher in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, Public School #4. Over the course of her career, she taught many grades and was recognized for her exceptional expertise in the classroom, including being one of only two people at the time to hold a Doctorate in Teaching Methods. Her commitment to her students and to the craft of teaching reflected a lifelong belief in learning, patience, and doing things well.
Gail and her husband, Bill, visited the Florida Panhandle for many years before making Navarre their home in 2005, following their retirement. Together, Gail and Bill enjoyed traveling in their RV, embracing the freedom of the open road and the simple joy of shared time. Gail also took pride in supporting her husband, “Buffalo Bill” Leighton, as he performed as a Western Cowboy and Quickdraw Specialist, standing beside him with steady encouragement.
In retirement, Gail became a talented artist, working primarily in oil on canvas. She refined her skills through the teachings of Barbara Fudge, and in more recent years, Dell Galvin. Gail’s specialty was painting animals, with a particular fondness for dogs and cats. She was adamant about beginning with the eyes—believing they are the windows to the soul—and she used that conviction to capture the spirit and presence of each subject with care and sensitivity.
Gail is survived by her beloved husband of 54 years, William "Bill" Leighton; a sister, Blanche (John Henry) Ettinger; niece, Bre and nephew, Guy; and her cherished cats, Red and Grumpy. She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Else Leighton; and her adored feline companions, Makaneu and Scamper.
