Our Father was born on November 22, 1934 in Wrayswood, Georgia to Jack and Lula Wood, and was the eighth of 10 children born into his family. He attended and graduated from Union Point High School, Union Point, Ga. That same year he enlisted in the US Navy in July of 1953 expecting to serve for a few years and see the world. In 1957 he met and fell in love with his beloved Patricia (Brown) Wood. They married in 1958 and had three children Bruce (Nina) Wood, Robert Wood and Beverly (David) Nichols. Their marriage lasted 53 years until Patricia preceded him in death in 2011. His family was his greatest joy but, Gene was most proud to serve his country as a member of the United States Navy for 35 yrs.; rising from seaman recruit to retiring in 1988 as a full Commander. He had many duty stations and spent time in Naples, Italy, Yokosuka, Japan and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Many lifelong friends were made along the way. He was a Lifetime member of the Warrington Elks Lodge, American Legion and Am Vets. He was proud of his dedication to these organizations and all of the work they did to help the community we live in. Pallbearers will be Christopher Wood, Josh Nichols, Taylor Nichols, Dennis Whitworth, James Holt and Charles Decker. The family of Commander Wood wishes to extend our sincere thanks to staff at The Blake assisted living facility and Covenant Hospice who provided love and tenderness to our father at the end of his journey. We would also say a special thank you to Patricia Prendergast, her love, care, compassion and loyalty to our father throughout their relationship is to be admired, and she will always be a special person to our family. First of all I want to say to Bruce,Bobby and Beverly, I am so sorry for your loss. I knew your dad from way back in the fifties. I don’t know if you remember me because it’s been a long time. My sister, (your aunt Maisie )and your uncle Earl and I were inseparable in those days so I met your dad and mom through them. You kids were just little tikes then but I remember how precious y’all were😊 with all 3 having that beautiful blond hair. I remember a lot of funny stories from those days too. Your mom and dad were hilarious. The story of your mom and Bruce and the sandles is one example of your moms wit. Your mom and dad were wonderful people and everybody that ever met them loved them. It’s been many years since I’ve seen them and when I saw the announcement about your father my heart skipped a beat and I truly cried. I started remembering those”good ole days”. Anyway just know you all are in my prayers. It’s better knowing they are finally back together again👍

Dear Beverly, Bruce and Bobbie, Please accept my deepest condolences. My favorite memory was when your parents visited my parents in Pennsylvania. I stopped in for a visit and was surprised to see a big beautiful RV. Aunt Pat gave me a tour and made me a drink before I even saw Uncle Gene. They were both so exited about the new adventure they were sharing. They talked about all the places they planned on seeing in the US. They were amazing loving people. I will keep you all in my prayers in the days ahead.

Bruce, Bobby and Beverly ... I am so sorry Uncle Gene has left us. I know how hard it is to loose someone. I have so many memories of my childhood growing up with all of you and..aunt pat and uncle gene...and all the fun, sometimes trouble, we had. I love them both very much. I can just see mom, dad, and aunt pat sitting at the card table in heaven... And Aunt Pat saying to Uncle Gene "about time you got here!"I love you all very much... Your cousin, Debbie
