Harold B. Mitchell
November 1, 1935 – May 24, 2018
Pensacola — Harold "Mitch" Mitchell, 82, passed away Thursday morning, May 24, 2018 with family and dear friends by his side. Mitch was the son of Harold W. Mitchell, a coal miner and Lola Jean Spears, a working mother. He is survived by his beautiful, treasured wife of 58 years, Dorothy "Midge" Mitchell, the apple of his eye, daughter Michelle Kane (Bud) and his "favorite" granddaughter, Tarah Sarra (Kyle), all residing locally and grandson Kyle Mitchell, United States Army. Mitch was preceded in death by his son, Dennis Mitchell. Mitch was born November 1, 1935 in Jodie, West Virginia. After briefly attending college, he joined the United States Navy. He proudly served for 20 years. Mitch is a veteran of the Vietnam War. As an aircraft engine mechanic, he served aboard multiple ships including the USS Shangri-La, USS Intrepid and the USS Saratoga, proudly keeping aircraft in ready status and safe for their pilots. Many evaluations describe him as being the best at his craft and an outstanding sailor in every respect. His proudest career accomplishment was when he was meritoriously promoted to E-7, but decided family would now come first and chose to retire in 1974. After a few short years working retail, he was employed with the US Civil Service as a sheet metal mechanic aboard NAS, Pensacola, retiring in 1998. Civil Service afforded him the time to become actively involved in everything "family', from PTA president to softball coach, to mentor and advisor, to disciplinarian and friend. Generally the best husband, dad and pawpaw ever! He discovered a true passion in June 2014, when he joined the NWFL Chapter of the Patriot Guard Riders. The Guard proudly escorts our fallen military, veterans and first responders to their final resting place. With a deep admiration, Mitch felt it was his honor and privilege to provide this service. At 82 and only four short years, he had completed well over 500 missions. His legacy with the local chapter is their "summer" vests. Mitch personally made every single vest. Visitation will be Thursday, May 31st from 5:00 — 7:00 PM at Oak Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 1st at 10:30 AM at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service with full military honors at Barrancas National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family will accept donations on behalf of the local chapter of the Patriot Guard during the visitation and service.
