Ingrid was born August 26, 1930 in Berlin Germany. She is pre-deceased by her father Heinrich Helmann and mother Adelheid Saborowski and daughter Sybille Muenzberg. Her siblings were older sister Gisela Jahnel and twin sister Gabriele Dittert. Her remaining relatives are Claudia Jahnel and Thorsten Jahnel who both reside in Berlin. The Helmann family endured hardships living in Berlin during WWII. Unfortunately her father died during the war leaving mother and 3 children to survive. Through the mothers perseverance they came out of challenging times well and all 3 daughters married. Ingrid inherited her mothers great strength and “moxy”.
Ingrid worked for over 40 years in Germany primarily in food service. Ingrid was head waitress and managed many difficult situations. She met her wonderful spouse of nearly 40 years, Columbus, at work. He was in the US Army food service and was her boss. They married in 1962. Columbus loved Ingrid dearly and did most of the cooking!. He loved her daughter “Bille” as if she were his own. After Columbus was medically discharged from the military they moved to the states in 1990 to access better healthcare. They moved to a lovely home on Redwing Dr and she lived there for over 30 years. Columbus was quite ill the last 3 years of his life. Ingrid was a devoted nursemaid and stayed at his side for 3 years taking excellent care of him. He died in 2001. Her daughter Bille had worked as a fight attendant for many years and lived in Hollywood Fl. Tragically she was killed in a car accident in 2005.
In spite of much loss and tragedy Ingrid has persevered. She was very active with the Red Cross and Daughters of the Nile when Columbus was a Shriner. Ingid loved to entertain and had delightful parties. She was a daily attendee with aqua aerobics and Yoga at Milestone Aquatic club for over 20 years. She made many friends there. She kept up with all her German friends as well, her best friends were Jutta and Elke. Ingrid traveled extensively. She was a devoted pet sitter and owner; she loved her dog Macy immensely. From 2020 to 2024 she attended the Salvation Army pool until she was too sick to deal with the water temperature. She was a Catholic but had not been able to attend church for years. Her friend Kathy Vail brought her communion and anointed her regularly and prayed with her.
Emma Page is a talented and gracious nurse who had cared for Ingrid's friend Sandra Sheltry. Emma had promised Sandra to care for Ingrid after Sandra died several years ago. Emma looked after Ingrid, taking her to doctors appointments for years and bringing her delicious food. She stayed with Ingrid overnight during the entire time of her recent decline. She’d spend the night in the hospital as well. Sweet Emma was on her side at her last breath. Her neighbors Erick Hebert and Cindy Crampton also supported Ingrid over the last few months. Hospice staff were great and Ingrid especially loved Danielle and her prior PT Joe.
Ingrid was generous and could be quite free offering advice and critique. She was a force to be reckoned with. She lived life her way. She was fierce which is undoubtedly why she lived so much longer than any of her family. We will miss you Ingrid.
