

James H. Margist Sr., 82, of Milton, Florida, passed away surrounded by people he loved at his home. James was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Eleanor Margist; brother, Robert “Bob” Margist; children, Danny, Lisa, John, and Robin; and granddaughter, Erial Patterson.
He is survived by his children, James “Jim” Margist, Michelle, Rich, Jamie, Sherry, Nadine, Teresa, James, Christina, Robert, and Michael; sisters, Denise Margist and Elaine Fisher; and a large and loving family including 38 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Among those who shared a particularly special bond with him are his grandchildren Micah, Ara, Gwen, Austin, Skyler, Caleb, William, Briseis, Aiden, and Matthew.
James was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, grew up in Springfield, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill in 1961, with honors in intramural sports, Rifle Team and student guard.
James discovered his passion for cooking early in life. In 1964, he became the youngest Executive Chef at the prestigious Wilmington Country Club, where he had the opportunity to cook for many distinguished guests. Cooking was more than a career to James it was a lifelong passion passed down through generations.
Throughout his career, James owned and operated several restaurants and worked at Mountain Lake Country Club and the Kittansett Club. Whether he was preparing meals professionally or cooking for family gatherings, James believed food was meant to bring people together.
James was known for being a hardworking man who dedicated much of his life to providing for his family. Whenever he did have a day off, he spent it taking his children places and creating memories with them. He had a special way of making the impossible happen if it meant bringing happiness to the people he loved. He was a generous and giving man whose kindness touched many lives.
James treasured time spent with his family. Some of his favorite memories were trips to Wildwood, Vero Beach, and many other places. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing games, and simply enjoying time together with his family.
Those who knew James will always remember his sense of humor. He was a prankster at heart who loved making people laugh and was well known for telling tall tales that could entertain a room for hours. His laughter and storytelling brought joy to countless family gatherings.
James lived life fully and believed in enjoying each moment. In his own words, he wished to be remembered:
"With a happy heart, lots of smiles, and an unending love for his family."
Though his kitchen may now be quiet, the warmth he created around every table will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 am until 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 18, 2026. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Bayview Memorial Park.
